A Google Business Profile takes about twenty minutes to claim and roughly three hours to finish properly. Almost everybody does the twenty minutes.
The gap matters because the profile, not the website, is what ranks in the map pack, and the map pack is where the clicks are on any query with local intent.
This is a complete pass through the profile, ordered by how much each field moves rankings rather than by how Google lays out the form.
Tier One: Do These First
These four have the largest effect on whether you appear at all.
Primary category
The highest-impact field in the profile, and the most commonly set wrong.
Your primary category determines the searches you are eligible to appear for. Not influences. Determines. A business categorised as "Advertising Agency" will not surface for many searches where "Marketing Agency" does, even with identical everything else.
How to get it right: search your main service term in an incognito window from your city. Open the top three map pack results. Their primary category is visible in the profile. Use what the winners use.
Then add secondary categories, but only ones you genuinely serve. Padding the list dilutes relevance rather than expanding reach.
Business name
Use your real business name. The one on your registration and your signage.
Adding keywords is a direct guideline violation. It works briefly, competitors report it through a form built for exactly this purpose, and the outcome is suspension. Reinstatement is slow, manual, and sometimes unsuccessful.
Address and service area
If customers come to you, use the street address and make sure the map pin is on the actual door. Pins land in the middle of a road or on the wrong building surprisingly often, and Google measures distance from the pin.
If you go to customers, set a service area and hide the address. Both is allowed only if you genuinely have staffed premises customers can visit.
On virtual offices: Google's guidelines require staffed premises during your posted hours. Coworking desks shared by dozens of listings are a common suspension trigger in Indian metros.
Hours
Accurate, including special hours for Diwali, Holi, Independence Day, and any regional holiday you close for.
This is not busywork. Google surfaces "open now" prominently, users complain when a listing is wrong, and repeated complaints degrade trust in the profile.
Tier Two: The Prominence Signals
Reviews
The strongest prominence signal available to you, and the only one competitors cannot copy.
Build a system, not a campaign. A short link sent by WhatsApp or email at the point the customer is happiest, every time, forever. Sporadic pushes produce review spikes, and spikes get filtered.
Ask for specifics. "Would you mention which service we did for you?" produces review text containing your service keywords, which are indexed. "Please leave a review" produces "Good service".
Reply to all of them. Response rate is a signal. More importantly, your reply to a one-star review is read by every prospect who scrolls past it, and a calm, specific, non-defensive answer converts better than the complaint costs you.
Never buy reviews. Detection is good, penalties hit the profile rather than the fake reviews, and recovery is painful.
Photos
Profiles with photos get materially more clicks and direction requests, and Google reads photo activity as a liveness signal.
- Exterior shots from the street, so people can find the door
- Interior shots that show what walking in is like
- Team photos, which outperform stock imagery consistently
- Product or work photos
- A logo and a cover image
Add photos monthly. A profile whose last upload was two years ago looks dormant.
Citations
Your Name, Address, and Phone, identical everywhere: JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Yellow Pages India, your Facebook page, LinkedIn, and your own website footer.
Identical means character for character. "Pvt Ltd" and "Private Limited" are different strings. So are "Sector 62" and "Sec-62".
In India the wrinkle is that directories create listings for you without asking. Search your business name in quotes and see what already exists, then claim or correct each one.
Tier Three: The Fields That Compound
Services and products
List every service as a separate entry with a real description. These are indexed and they help you surface for specific queries rather than only your category term.
Business description
750 characters. Write for a person deciding whether to call you, not for a crawler. Include what you do, where you do it, and what makes you a different choice. Keyword stuffing here reads badly to humans and does little for rankings.
Posts
Posts expire after seven days, which tells you their function: a freshness signal. Weekly is enough. Offers, new services, completed projects, and useful advice all work.
Q&A
Anybody can ask a question on your profile, and anybody can answer, including a competitor with an opinion.
Seed it yourself. Post the eight questions customers actually ask and answer them properly. Then check it monthly, because unanswered questions sit there publicly.
Attributes
Wheelchair accessible, online appointments, accepts UPI, women-led. These are filters users can search on, and they cost nothing to set.
Messaging
Turn it on only if somebody will answer. Google tracks response rate and shows it. Slow replies are worse than no messaging at all.
Quick Audit
Run this on your own profile now.
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Primary category matches top competitors | Yes |
| Business name has no added keywords | Yes |
| Map pin is on the actual entrance | Yes |
| Hours include festival closures | Yes |
| More than 20 reviews | Yes |
| Every review has a reply | Yes |
| Photo added in the last 30 days | Yes |
| Post published in the last 7 days | Yes |
| All services listed with descriptions | Yes |
| At least 5 Q&A entries answered | Yes |
| NAP identical on the top 5 directories | Yes |
Most profiles fail six or more of these.
What to Expect
Category and NAP fixes can move rankings within two to four weeks. Reviews and photos compound over months. Posts and Q&A are maintenance rather than a lever.
Track discovery searches in profile insights. That is the count of people who found you by searching a category rather than your name, and it is the number that proves the work is landing.
The Profile Is Half the Job
The map pack runs on your profile. The organic results below it run on your website, and they need their own work: location pages, service pages, and structured data. We cover that side in local SEO in India.
