Local SEO in India: How to Rank in Your Own City

Something has changed in how Indians search, and most business websites have not caught up with it.

Look at real search data for almost any service business and you will find a pattern: people are not searching for a service, they are searching for a service near a place. Not "chartered accountant" but "chartered accountant near me". Not "how does Amazon FBA work" but "how does Amazon FBA work near Mumbai, India".

That last one is a real query pattern we see in our own Search Console data, and it is a strange one, because there is nothing local about how FBA works. Google is appending location intent to queries that are not inherently local, because it has learned that Indian searchers usually want somebody they can reach.

If your site is not built for that, you are competing nationally for traffic that was never going to convert nationally.

Local Search Is Two Results, Not One

The critical thing to understand is that a local query returns two separate rankings on one page.

The map pack. Three business listings with a map, sitting above the normal results. Ranked almost entirely on your Google Business Profile, not your website.

The organic results. The familiar blue links below. Ranked on your website in the usual way, with a location signal layered on.

These are scored differently. A business can own the map pack and be nowhere in organic, or rank first organically and never appear on the map. They need different work, and most businesses only do one of them.

The map pack takes the majority of clicks on a local query. If you are choosing where to start, start there.

What Ranks the Map Pack

Google weighs three things.

Relevance. Does the profile match what was searched? This is driven by your category selection, your business name, your services, and your description.

Distance. How far the business is from the searcher, or from the place named in the query. You cannot change this, and it is the reason a single office cannot rank across an entire metro.

Prominence. How well known the business is. Reviews, citations, links, and general web presence.

You can influence relevance and prominence. Distance is fixed, which has one important implication: you rank in a radius, not in a city. A business in Andheri does not rank in Navi Mumbai just because both are Mumbai. Plan around service areas, not city names.

The Work That Moves the Needle

1. Set the primary category correctly

This is the highest-leverage field in the entire profile and the one most often set carelessly.

Your primary category has more influence on which searches you appear for than anything else. "Marketing Agency", "Internet Marketing Service", and "Advertising Agency" surface for materially different queries.

Find the category your best-ranking competitors use. Set that as primary. Add genuinely relevant secondary categories, but do not pad the list. Irrelevant secondary categories dilute rather than broaden.

2. Get reviews, and get them steadily

Review count and average rating both feed prominence. Two details matter more than most people realise.

Velocity counts. Forty reviews collected over two years reads as a healthy business. Forty collected in one week reads as manipulation, and Google filters accordingly.

Review text is indexed. When a customer writes "they rebuilt our Shopify store", that phrase becomes a relevance signal. You cannot script this, but you can ask a specific question. "Would you mention which service we did for you?" produces far more useful reviews than "please leave us a review".

Reply to every review, including the bad ones. Response rate is a signal, and a measured reply to a complaint is read by every future customer who scrolls past it.

3. Make NAP consistent everywhere

Name, Address, Phone. The exact same string, character for character, on your website, your Google Business Profile, JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, your Facebook page, and every directory you are listed in.

"Shop 4, MG Road" and "Shop No. 4, M.G. Road" are two different businesses as far as an automated crawler is concerned. In India this is a real problem because listings get created for you, by directories, without your involvement. Search your business name and clean up what you find.

4. Build a real page per location and per service

One page listing eight cities ranks for none of them.

If you serve multiple cities, each needs its own page with genuinely distinct content: local landmarks, local case studies, local client names, the specific team who covers that area. Swapping the city name in an otherwise identical template is the doorway-page pattern Google has penalised for years, and it works even less well now than it did.

The same applies to services. A page per service, each one substantial, beats one page that mentions everything.

5. Add LocalBusiness structured data

Structured data tells Google explicitly what a page's generic HTML only implies: that this is a business, at this address, with these hours, offering these services.

It does not directly lift rankings. It does help Google associate the entity correctly, which matters more every year as AI-generated summaries pull from structured sources.

6. Post to the profile

Google Business Profile posts expire after seven days, which tells you how Google reads them: as a freshness signal. A profile posting weekly looks active. One last updated in 2024 looks closed, and Google will eventually ask users whether it is.

The Mistakes That Cost the Most

Keyword stuffing the business name. "Sharma Digital Marketing SEO PPC Agency Noida" is a guideline violation, competitors report it, and suspensions are hard to reverse. Use the name on your signage.

A virtual office address. Google's guidelines require staffed premises during stated hours. Coworking addresses shared with forty other listings get filtered.

Buying reviews. Detection has improved substantially and the penalty applies to the profile, not the reviews. It is not worth it.

Ignoring the Q&A section. Anybody can ask a question on your profile, and anybody can answer it, including a competitor. Seed it with your own real questions and answer them properly.

Treating "near me" as a keyword. You do not optimise for "near me" by writing "near me" on the page. Google resolves it from the searcher's location against your profile. Your job is to make the location signal unambiguous.

What to Measure

In Google Business Profile insights, track searches that were discovery rather than direct. Direct searches are people who already knew your name. Discovery searches are people who found you by category, and that number growing is the real evidence local SEO is working.

In Search Console, watch impressions on your location and service pages, and watch average position on queries that contain a place name.

Expect movement in eight to twelve weeks. The map pack can move faster than organic, sometimes within a month of fixing categories and collecting reviews.

Where This Fits

Local SEO is the part of search that rewards small operators, because distance is a ranking factor no budget can outspend. A national competitor with ten times your authority still does not have an office in your neighbourhood.

Once the profile is in order, the next step is the profile itself in detail, which we cover in our Google Business Profile checklist. If the technical foundation of the site is the weak link instead, start with the technical SEO audit.
